Want to Calm Down Fast?
Stressed? Anxious? Angry? Overwhelmed?
While you may not be able to solve the problem straight away, there is a way to calm your body down.
And FAST!
What’s known as the mammalian dive reflex, is a survival instinct that we humans share with our sea dwelling mammal friends such as dolphins, seals and whales.
This reflex kicks in when you immerse your nostrils and face in water (COLD water!) while simultaneously holding your breath.
The mammalian dive reflex instantly kicks off a series of physiological responses including: slowing your heart rate, increasing oxygen capacity, shifting blood away from your extremities where it is needed the least, moving it over to prioritize your vital organs.
The COLDER the water, the FASTER the reaction.
To calm down fast:
Fill a bowl or sink with ice water or turn on a cold shower.
Take a deep breath and submerge your face in the water for a minimum of 15 - 30 seconds or longer if tolerated.
Notice what happens to your heart rate and breathing as it regulates and calms you down fast!
NB. Seek medical advice before trying this if you have any heart conditions or concerns.
